Bree Island

Bree Island

Bree Island is a nêhiyaw iskwew (Cree woman) and a proud member of the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation, located in Treaty 8 territory. Bree practices Woodland art, a unique and culturally significant storytelling art form that embodies the rich traditions and teachings of her Cree heritage. Through her art, Bree emphasizes the importance of honoring cultural protocols and the duty of care required when sharing nêhiyaw (Cree) worldviews. She believes that Woodland art is not just a visual expression but a profound connection to land, spirit, and the relationality that binds her people. Bree's work serves as a daily reminder of these teachings, allowing individuals to embrace their identity and reclaim what was once taken.

"It is through our stories that we carry our teachings forward with us. When we surround ourselves in our cultural art, those also become our daily reminders of those teachings. Through art, we can embrace who we are and reclaim what was stolen." — Auntie Bree Island
